Abstract

This study Voters Perception and Attitude to Political Campaigns on Social Media During the 2019 Presidential Elections in Nigeria, sought to find out the voters’ perception of social media during the 2019 presidential elections. The survey research method was adopted. Abuja and Nasarawa state were chosen as area of the study. The population of the study was drawn from Abuja which is 1,406,239 and Nasarawa state which is 1,869,377, the sum total of the populations is 3,275,616 million people. The sample size was drawn from the population and determined by an online sample size calculator known as survey Monkey, the sample size used is 386. The questionnaire served as instrument of data collection, 386 questionnaires were distributed to elicit responses from respondents. At the end of the study, the findings reveal that, the use of social media by candidates for the 2019 presidential election campaign affected voter’s choice for either PDP or APC; It also found that Facebook, Twitter and Instagram were the most used social media platforms during the 2019 presidential election campaigns in Nigeria; the study recommend that, Nigerian politicians should continue to use the social media to engage the electorate during political campaigns especially the youths since they are the major users of social media. In addition, periodic public enlightenment on the use of social media platforms for political purposes especially by the government, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society, mass media, National Orientation Agency (NOA) and other online social groups should be organized.
