Abstract

An emergent feature of Nigeria democracy is the politics of Godfatherism in electoral process, today in Nigeria one hardly won an election without Godfatherism, Godfathers sees politics as an opportunity to invest in their Godson with the aim of getting not only their money but profits it has no w become business, this is quite unfortunate, politics ha ve been monetized in Nigeria, credibility does not count citizens with the highest bidder get party nomination, secure ticket and win an election, most credible candidate don't have huge amount of money to purchase party nomination forms this will link us to Godfatherism were people that are financially handicapped are sponsored by some people to clinch electoral victory call GODFA THERS. This paper is an overview of politics of Godfatherism and the survival ofN igeria democracy, this also covered some states across Nigeria and a critical looks at the activities of Godfathers, it goes to show the effect associated with it and the negation of democratic principles in Nigeria. We shall see the reasons and factors that encouraged it, the research adopts the secondary source of data while the elite theory was used to analysed Godfatherism in Nigeria, the paper concluded by saying, Godfathers invest in their Godson with the aim ofm aking profit, and when they Godson breach any agreement crisis erupt, Godfatherim truncate democracy as it deprived the people to vote for credible and competent leaders and the paper recommended that those involved in such act most be punish according to the law to serve as a deterrent to others, there should be education and enlightenment on the negative effect of Godfatherism and lastly youths most be given employment, because an idle man is a devil workshop, youths are mostly recruited for electoral fraud violence, killing and snatching of ballot boxes.
