English is a national and inter national language in Nigeria. It is the medium of instruction from primary three to tertiary institutions in the country. Consequently, pre-teacher preparation programmes must be adequate to produce well trained and qualified teachers into the secondary school. The teachers must possess complementary competencies which a good teacher training programme should offer a teacher like possession of language competence and proficiency, and pedagogic strategies. Furthermore, the teachers must be well trained to possess the content knowledge of the various skills of English language, theories and practice of teaching English, instructional aids creation and utilization, lesson plan and delivery among others. While on the field, the teaching staff should be sponsored for higher qualifications and to attend seminars, conferences, and workshops regularly to up-date their knowledge. There should also be adequate facilities like classrooms and provision of incentives like adequate remuneration for the teachers to be comfortable and teach effectively for students' success and attainment of competence in English language.en_US
