Assessment of atmospheric concentrations of lead (Pb), zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) in Kudenda Industrial Layout of Kaduna town was carried out. The levels of the heavy metals accumulated in the epiphytic moss Funaria hygrometrical within the area were determined. The area was divided into ten zones of approximately equal area. Composite samples were taken from each zone. Control samples were also taken from two rural sites, outside the layout, where there are neither industrial nor commercial activities. The samples were digested using HN0i-HCl04 acid mixture (4 :!). The Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry was used to determine the metal levels in the samples. The concentrations and ranges for the metals in the study area were 88.2 ± 37.9 (48-168), 85.8 ± 23.4 (52-126) and 0.62 ± 0.13 (0.41-0.81), for Pb, Zn and Cd, respectively. The differences in the metal levels in the samples from the study area compare to those in the samples from the control sites were statistically significant. This is an indication of some levels of pollution of the study area by these metals due to industrial activities. There was a slight correlation between Pb and Zn concentrations for all zones (r- 0.55, p < 0.01) showing that similar sources might have been contributing to the levels of these metals.en_US
