Abstract
The groundwater in Ise-Orun Local Government Area was assessed using physical, chemical and microbiological analyses. Water from twelve wells whose depths varied from 6-12 m was analysed. The range of pH and conductivity values, total dissolved solids and temperatures of the groundwater conformed to the World Health Organization's standards for potable water. Chemicals which included magnesium, calcium, nitrite, sulphates, nitrates, chlorides, iron and phosphates were concentrated in the groundwater to levels which were not injurious to human health. However all samples of groundwater examined contained bacteria especially, Escherichia coli and coliforms which rendered the water unsafe if consumed untreated. The counts of Escherichia coli ranged from 2 to 23 and coliforms from 8 to 46. These organisms can be removed from the groundwater through chlorination, boiling andAlteration to make it potable.
