This paper examines the various strategies to economic and social development in Nigeria exemplified by Nigeria’s National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS). It appraises the development programs of past-governments and opines that historical factors largely occasioned by the British colonialists, the amalgamation of Northern and Southern ■ Protectorates, religious bigotry, tribalism, sectionalism, corruption and government propaganda among others, are responsible for the restiveness, non-chalant and apathetic attitudes of the Nigerians towards government development programs. A suggestion for the role of psychologist in social engineering, mobilization national re-orientation for NEEDS is advocated.en_US
