Abstract
This paper examines the various strategies to economic and social development in Nigeria exemplified by Nigeria’s National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS). It appraises the development programs of past-governments and opines that historical factors largely occasioned by the British colonialists, the amalgamation of Northern and Southern ■ Protectorates, religious bigotry, tribalism, sectionalism, corruption and government propaganda among others, are responsible for the restiveness, non-chalant and apathetic attitudes of the Nigerians towards government development programs. A suggestion for the role of psychologist in social engineering, mobilization national re-orientation for NEEDS is advocated.
