dc.description.abstractUtilising Participatory Communication approach for curbing Child Sexual Abuse in public primary schools with in Abuja Municipal Area Council is the focus of this study because whereas there is a rich literature on the psychosocial consequences of child sexual abuse, there is a paucity of literature on how to prevent or curb this menace, which is on the rise in the city. This study therefore examined how participatory communication approach can be deployed through some of its tools and models in empowering the pupils with knowledge and safety tips to avoid falling victim of the menace. The study was anchored on Participatory Communication Theory (PCT) and Symbolic Convergence Theory (SCT) for its theoretical framework for their pragmatic relevance. While it found the participatory communication tools of drama and storytelling not just potent but indispensable tools in empowering and equipping pupils with knowledge and safety measures to help curb the menace, it also discovered that government through relevant regulatory agencies need to do more in the education and sensitisation of pupils and staff of primary schools within the said municipality. The study concluded by recommending that the policy makers - the Education Secretariat, the Education Resource Centre (ERC), Department of Policy Implementation (DPI) and all stakeholders within the Abuja Municipal Area Council introduce Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Education into the primary school education curriculum. It also urged the various stakeholders and education regulators to make it a policy that participatory communication tools such as drama and storytelling are maximally utilised in conducting advocacy campaigns and enlightenment for pupils, teachers and parents.en_US
