Abstract

This study investigates the effect cf the public expenditure on poverty reduction in Nigerian entering the period 2001 to 20011. The study used regression analysis to establish the relationship between government spending on education and health (proxies for public expenditure) and poverty reduction The stationarity Of the data series is tested using Augnented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test. Finding suggest that the relationship between government spending on education and poverty reduction in Nigeria is statistically insignificant Also the relationship between gouenment spending on health and poverty reduction is statistically insignificant The results indicate that public expenditure has no significant effect on poverty reduction in Nigeria The budgetary allocation to the education sector is still below the United Nations recommended rate cf 26% . On the basis cf the finding, the study recommends, among Others, that there should be gradual and steady increase in government spending in both education and health sectors cf the Nigerian economy with a View to reducing poverty rate in the country.
