Abstract
This paper examines Insecurity as an impediment to economic development of North eastern Nigeria: issues and solutions. The Paper analyzed: What are the root cause of Boko Haram Crisis and How Insecurity impede economic development of north eastern Nigeria: Currently the region is witnessing high spate of insecurity, by a group of insurgent called: The Jama'atu Ahlus-Sunnah lidda Awati Wal-Jihad popularly known as Boko Haram. This group was founded in 2001 in 'Maiduguri' the capital city ofBorno State north eastern Nigeria by Mohammed Yusuf the pioneer leader and originator of Boko Haram group. These constitute serious threat to lives and properties, hinder business activities and discourage local and foreign investors, all which retards Nigeria's economic development, This paper employed Documentary research as research methodology, under this study data are obtained, lifted out, analyses and interpreted using simple percentages in order to find answers to research problem. The study will rely on published document of government offices or government published materials especially, National Bureau of Statistics, (NBS), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Security and Exchange Commission, (SEC) the result found out that the insecurity situation in the region was alleged to have been attributed to some factors. Among which includes corruption, poverty, Unemployment, and poor Leadership etc. Consequently, This affected the region economically, In the light of the above the paper recommends that permanent solution to the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria lies in the domestication of true democracy and good governance, which will address the economic root on which extremist ideologists thrive such as absolute poverty, Unemployment, high rate of corruption; bad leadership; inequality, etc
