Counseling and the New National Policy on Education

Counseling denotes that people should undertake occupations that suit their personalities. That is to say, round pegs should be put into round holes. The paper submits that appropriate counseling whether it is carried on in the school or the traditional streaming and selection of occupations by the Africans is quite vital for effectiveness and efficiency in one’s chosen profession. This article affirms that with guidance and counseling, wastage in human as well as materials is drastically reduced and all these support the reason why the Federal Government of Nigeria in her National Policy on Education in (1981) stated that Guidance and Counseling should be an integral part of the overall educational system. The paper posits that the new National policy on Education is dependent on the accurate assessment and interpretation scores and hence, he child's entry behaviour should be carefully assessed at the junior and senior secondary levels. These baseline assessment data are very crucial in the decisions that are made on the child as to where he proceeds and what will benefit him most. The article concludes that indeed the success of the counselor in helping students in the 63.3.4 system is almost dependent on the degree of accuracy of the assessment he had made.
