Item Open Access Teacher Preparation for Effective Teaching of Junior Secondary School English(Department of Education English,Nasarawa State University Keffi., 2015-03-10) Alaku, Orame P.S.English is a national and inter national language in Nigeria. It is the medium of instruction from primary three to tertiary institutions in the country. Consequently, pre-teacher preparation programmes must be adequate to produce well trained and qualified teachers into the secondary school. The teachers must possess complementary competencies which a good teacher training programme should offer a teacher like possession of language competence and proficiency, and pedagogic strategies. Furthermore, the teachers must be well trained to possess the content knowledge of the various skills of English language, theories and practice of teaching English, instructional aids creation and utilization, lesson plan and delivery among others. While on the field, the teaching staff should be sponsored for higher qualifications and to attend seminars, conferences, and workshops regularly to up-date their knowledge. There should also be adequate facilities like classrooms and provision of incentives like adequate remuneration for the teachers to be comfortable and teach effectively for students' success and attainment of competence in English language.Item Open Access A MORPHOSEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF NAMES IN AGATU AND ALAGO DIALECTS OF IDOMA LANGUAGE(Department of English, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2016-02-12) John, Moses OchejeA morpho-semantic analysis of names in Agatu and Alago dialects of Idoma was examined to show Again and Alago norms and values expressed in their naming patterns. Names for both male and female were collected through observant method and were used for the analysis. Despite many works in ldoma culture and language, this field of morpho-semantic study has never been looked at within the framework of Agatu and Alago hence the need for this study. The data was derived from native speakers of Agatu and Alago in Agatu and Doma local government areas, one for Agatu and the other for Alago. The analysis shows circumstantial names, showing the circumstances surrounding a child’s birth, twins’ names, sentential names, death derivative name, names that portray the supremacy of God, names that show strength and descriptive names. Structural components such as noun-based compounds, verb based compounds and adjective-based compounds and their sub-categories were also identified in Agatu and Alago names. It was discovered that the meanings of some names are predictable from their structural components. Agatu and Alago native names should be reserved as a mark of identity, culture and traditionItem Open Access INFLUENCE OF HOME BACKGROUND ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF ADOLESCENT AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SULEJA, NIGER STATE(Department of Educational Management,Nasarawa State University Keffi., 2018-10-18) Josiah, TitusThe study sought me to investigate if home background influences adolescent’s academic performance. The respondents of' the study were twenty (20) student , two (2) school teachers, one head teacher, twenty parents of the students who were also respondents all these were drawn from suleja, Niger State. The instruments used were questionnaires for the head teacher and the school teachers, interview guide for the student’s parents and documentary analysis forms for the adolescents. The finding swere organized in relation to the factors in the home which influence student academic performance and interpretation of data was done in form of pie charts, bar graphs and tables. The study came up with various recommendations among them: The parents or guardians in suleja should ensure that their children do not trick too long distances to and from school by residing near the school. This is a study that reveals the connection of a name and names usage by a particular group of people or the world at large. In this dissertation, the concepts of Onomastic of anthropology, culture, ethnology and globalization were looked into as it affects name especially in the Izere language. The sole aim and motivation of this research was done with the intention to preserve the culture and language of the Afizere people. This will help prevent the language from going extinct as a result of written documents such as this. The theoretical frame work used for this dissertation are the Sapir Whorf‟s hypothesis and the descriptivist theory of names by Frege-Russell where they both believe that language and culture has a way of affecting the view of a speaker and how he/she views the world around it. Hence thoughts are expressed and transmitted through language which shapes the perception of the speaker. The researcher was able to view names in various sections as the names were derived in the Izere language using factors such as family circumstances, religion, politics, philosophical, myths, wealth and professions. The researcher was also able to look at how modernization and intermarriage has affected names in the Izere language. Borrowed names used by speakers of the Izere language were also analysed. In the sections pet names commonly used and known were also analysed. The researcher was able to visit five different areas in Jos metropolis like Federe, Maijuju, Jos Jarawa, Katon Rikkos and Bukuru were ten elderly speakers of the Izere language were randomly selected for an interview. The interviewees consisted of bothe males and females. Two persons from each area were interviewed ranging from the ages of 55-90 years old. The researcher discovered that since language is dynamic and names are also dynamic, as they both are at the risk of change and extinction as times goes on. Finally, the researcher therefore recommends the encouragement to parents to speak the Izere language to their children from a very tender age and also to teach them the basis that they need to know about the language and how it would affect their views as times goes on.Item Open Access IMPACT OF PARENTS TEACHERS ASSOCIATION (PTA) ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN BWARI AREA COUNCIL FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY (FCT) ABUJA(department of Education English, Nasarawa State University, Keffi,, 2019-12-05) Odigie, Magdalene AkwakegbeThis study is designed to find out the roles of Parents Teachers Associationin the Academic performance of students. The study employed a survey research design and stratified random sampling was used to select the respondents. Four research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The research instrument used for data collection was the questionnaire, the instrument consisted of twenty four (24) item questionnaire captioned. Parents Teachers Association’s, Participation in the Administration of Secondary School. The analytical tools used for the research questions were mean and standard deviation while the null hypothesis were tested using the t-test statistics of difference between mean samples at an alpha level of0.05.Based on the above findings, a number of recommendations were made which includes that; government should make policies regarding school community relationships and empowering Parents Teachers Associationto make levies to help provide for the school, teachers and the Parents Teachers Associationshould see themselves as partners in the process of educating the children, and finally government should provide guidelines for the Parents Teachers Association.Item Open Access EFFECT OF DOMESTICE VIOLENCE ON SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN KEFFI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF NASARAWA STATE(Department of Educational Management,Nasarawa State University Keffi., 2019-12-11) Abaka, Evelyn AnzakuThis study investigates effect of domestic violence on secondary school students academic performance in keffi local government area of nasarawa state Specific variables considered are physical abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse, psychological abuse and academic performance. The study adopted a descriptive survey. A sample size of 300 primary school pupils in keffi Local government. A self structured questionnaire titled: domestic violence and academic performance scale(DVAPS) was used for collection of data. The data obtained was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Mean scores and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while chi square was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance The result of the study reveals that there is a significant impact of verbal abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse and psychological abuse on academic performance of primary school pupils. The study recommended that Students should be counselled with relevant skills in changing their trauma experience at home and the way they behave conduct themselves at school
