Item Open Access Assessment of Insurgency and the State of the InsecurityStrategies in Combatting Security Forces Against Criminal Behaviour in Nigeria(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2021-06-10) Ishaya, Daniel Leku; Yiga, Helen SadiInsurgency is an embodiment of social ills th^ has threatened the security globally. I The ugly trends have affected the entire social existence and gamut of the human society both individual, social group and society as a whole. The problem of insurgency in Nigeria has negative connotation and impacts in the society. Insecurity in Nigeria have led to wanton destruction of lives and properties and social dislocation which necessitates government diversion of its resources that are meant for developmental programmed to the fight against insurgencies. Insecurity in the country is the major challenges confronting the society as a result of the system failure and dysfunctional governance. The system required synergy and collaboration both national and international in the country to fight insurgency. Theory of demolished crime security was used. The study utilized both primary and secondary methods. Sample size of 351 was drawn and the multi-stage sampling techniques designs with the ultimate sampling units being clusters were derived. The study revealed that security apparatus and law enforcement in Nigeria have significant role in the management of security challenges in fighting or combatting insurgent. Provision of useful information, identification of insurgents and the formation of community policing are fundamentals in fighting the menace. The study concludes that the problems associated with the fight against insurgency are because of the system failure and lack of internal and external control mechanism to checked the dysfunctions of the social system and lack of sufficient and inadequate international and national collaboration and synergy among the sister agencies and community policing. The study recommends that internal control system and adequate information disseminations would have enhanced security strategy in the country. Security need to be strengthened through provision of modem gadget or techniques, security mapping, general pocket radio service (GPRS), tracking system welfares and encouragement. The study underscores an understanding of criminal intelligence investigation which is merely analytical ability of human need creative and practical abilities to succeed in their life pursuits. It involves the harmful traditional practice of female genital removal which has an adverseds effect on the girl child in the nearby future. Female genital mutilation comes with a lot of negative consequences like HIV/AIDS, painful intercourse and probably death. If women are to be considered as equal and responsible members of the society, no aspect of their physical psychological or sexual integration can be compromised. This study therefore used secondary data to demonstrate the fact that the harmful traditional practice destroys the integrity of the womanhood and therefore needs to be abolished.Item Open Access GENDER INEQUALITY IN NIGERIA: A SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2015-11-11) Yiga, Helen SadiGender inequality has been experienced worldwide as connected to the neglect and discrimination against the women folk and as evidenced in most of our societies today. Nigerian women are faced with untold hardship ranging from discrimination inferiority complex, misrepresentation etc. this could be as a result of cultural, economic, psychological, religious and social factors which placed the woman at a disadvantage position. In Nigerian societies, the 1999 constitution prohibited such discrimination but certain factors continue to restrict women's right. This paper seeks to find out the relevance of woman in the society and how the cultural, social, psychological, religious and economic factors affect the gender in the society. The paper made use of liberal feminist theory in explaining the phenomenon, content analysis was use to source for data and the study found out that lack of empowerment amongst other included to the increased of women plight. It is the conclusion of this paper that efforts at gender and women studies must be hinged at reducing the inequality between men and women by improving the five levels of empowerment which are: welfare; access; conscientization, participation and control. That development projects must include the target population in this case women, in the process of needs assessment, problem identification, project planning, management, implementation and evaluationItem Open Access Intimate-Partner Violence and Coping Strategies among Pregnant Women in Keffi LGA, Nasarawa State(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2022-09-09) Yiga, Helen Sadi; Oche, Mohammed Ayuba; Mamman, Matthew SamuelIntimate partner violence especially against pregnant women has been identified as a social and public health problem affecting women globally and is considered as a violation of human rights with severe implications to safe motherhood. Despite this, previous studies have largely been skewed towards women with little attention given to the pregnant women. Hence, this study examined the prevalence of intimate partner violence and coping strategies among pregnant women in Keffi. The study was anchored on the Intersectional Feminist theory by Kimberle Crenshaw. The study adopted a mixed-method design involving a survey of 361 pregnant women attending antenatal clinic in 4 hospitals in Keffi LGA, Nasarawa State, Nigeria through a multi-stage sampling technique. 8 key informant interviews were also conducted. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics while the qualitative data were analysed using thematic content analysis. Findings shows that intimate partner violence was prevalent at 47.1% among pregnant women attending Ante Natal Clinic (ANC) in the sampled hospitals and this occurs very often as indicated by 80.4% of the participants. In addition, age at marriage was found not to be significantly associated with the experience of IPV among pregnant women [x2 oj =8.165, P<0.05]. Also, results revealed that IPV among pregnant women takes the form of hitting, insults, sexual abuse, threat of death, controlling & domineering, financial denial, and denial of sexual intimacy. In addition, Regarding the effects of IPV on reproductive health outcomes, findings show that 17.6% of respondents have suffered complications during pregnancy due to IPV. 29.4% have lost pregnancy. Also, almost half (49.1%) revealed that they missed ANC, more than half said they were depressed (58.8%) while others lost their infants (23.5%) as a result of abusive partners' behaviours. Finally, pregnant women resort to prayer (39.2%), crying in silence (43.1%), complain to health workers during ANC (5.9%), family/friends 37.3%) separation (39.2%) as coping strategies. The study concludes that intimate partner violence poses a greater challenge to pregnant women. Therefore, it is urgent to sensitize women to speak out in the face of intimate partner violence. Even though they believe in God, appropriate steps should also be taken for the sake of their reproductive health and well-being.Item Open Access Medium Security Correctional Custodial Centre Invasion: Its Implications and Challenges on National Security System(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2022-07-06) Ishaya, Daniel Leku; Yiga, Helen SadiMedium security custodial center in Nigeria is one of the major institution responsible for Inmates locked within the prison wells are segregated from the outside world, kept under constant scrutiny and surveillance and forced to obey a strict code of office rules to avoid facing formal sanction. The utility of security correctional centre as an institution for rehabilitation of offenders and preparing them for normal life has always been a matter of concern. Individuals who commit crimes are sent to correctional institution for rehabilitation and corrections for certain crimes such as murder, offenders may be sentenced to life imprisonment. Conceptual analysis and theoretical framework were used for confining people against their will whereby those awaiting trial or sentencing, execution, transportation and deportation to other states across the medium security service. Theories of Rehabilitation, deterrence, incapacitation and retribution explain a variety of justification and explanation of inmates in the security correctional institution. Secondary source of data collection was adopted in the study. Characteristics of prisons and classification are categorized in accordance with the types of the inmates, the structural features and the extend of security arrangement such as maxi-maxi security, maximum security, medium security, minimum security, women security and satellite prison. The challenges and problems of the prison breaks in Nigerian could be associated to many dangers such as lack of synergy and collaboration in the security operatives and threats to national security in society as a whole. Overcrowding, poor funding, inadequate dilapidated structures, poor feeding, unhygienic environment of the inmates, lack of modern facility such as closed-circuit televisions, e-monitoring device and electrically activated alarm system should be encouraged. The study concludes and recommends that there should be adequate measures for the functional security surveillance, improve intelligence gathering and protection of the centre to address feature occurrence bedeviling prison breaks. Therefore, provision for modem facility and monitoring device to regulate the rate of correctional security problem and to possibly reform and restructure to enhance institution for better services.Item Open Access THE PROLIFERATION OF ARMS AMONG ETHNIC MILITIA IN NIGERIA: AN ANALYSIS OF SOUTHERN SENATORIAL DISTRICT, NASARAWA STATE(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2017-10-27) Ishaya, Daniel Leku; Yiga, Helen SadiThe wide spread of arms in Nigeria has, posed serious dangers to lives and properties in Nigeria particularly, Nasarawa State. Nigeria has recorded several cases of violence generated by one militia group or another in their quest for land resources, literature on militia either agitating for economic interest or political representation in Nigeria were abound. The increase acquisition of small arms by the various ethnic groups has facilitated the wide spread of small arms in Nigeria, Nasarawa State. The main objective of this study is to investigate the arms proliferation and ethnic militiaformation in Nasarawa State. The study adopted Marxist conflict theory to explain the phenomenon. Primary and secondary data were used for the paper and the study discovered that wide spread arms leads to the formation of ethnic militia in Nasarawa State southern senatorial district, it also revealed that there are two major rival ethnic militia in Nasarawa (Fidani herds-men and the Ombatse militia), it also discovered that there is mutual suspicion among the two rival ethnic groups in the study area. Hence, the study recommends urgent steps be taken by government to disarm and recover the large arms in circulation, it also recommended that government should, investigates and fish-out local gun- smith in Nasarawa State. The police should liaise with the vigilante to search for and recover small arms in the area and finally, the study recommends that traditional and religious leaders should enlighten 'the people on the dangers of small arms and light weapons in Nasarawa state and Nigeria in general.Item Open Access The Role of Diaspora Remittances in Socio-Economic Development of Nigeria and Policy Intervention(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2016-01-09) Maureen, Nnabuenyi Uju; Yiga, Helen SadiThe ensuing development impacts of remittances, as a means of transfer of wealth, on socioeconomic factors are increasingly viewed with importance. Hence, statistics on Africans living outside their countries are estimated to be more than 30 million people. Therefore, remittances by African migrants have become significant as official development assistance. This work examines the contributions Africans in Diaspora, with reference to Nigeria in nation building and developmental strides through their remittances and the utilization of the remittances in socio-economic, development and poverty reduction. Literature on Africans in Diaspora and migrant remittances concentrate more on the sources of the remittances but say little or nothing on their economic impacts on the mass of poor Africans back home. However, the new policy interest in Diaspora reflects a broader concern with globalization which calls for greater reflection as part of this work. Pure Altruism and pure self interest theories were used to explain this work. Methodology is both qualitative and quantitative.Item Open Access SUICIDE PREVENTION AND THE IMPACT OF CRIME AND CRIMINALITY AMONG VULNERABLE VICTIMS IN THE SOCIETY(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2023-01-01) Ishaya, Daniel Leku; Abdullahi, Bashir Idris; Yiga, Helen Sadi; Omaku, Sani A.S.Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one’s own death (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2022). Suicide is death caused by injuring oneself with the intent to die. Suicide is the serious public health problem and the suicide rates increased 30% between 2000-2018, and declined in 2019 and 2020. Suicide refers to the act of taking one's own life (Shankar,2018). Suicide is an analysis of a phenomenon regarding as pathological, intended to throw light on the evil which threatens modern industrial societies. Suicide is an indication of disorganization of both individual and society. Every case of death resulting directly from a positive or negative death performed by the victim. In Nigeria, suicide is a conscious act and the person concerned is fully aware of its consequences. Most people shy away from discussing because of the stigma attached, cultural taboo and a general lack of understanding.
