ATTENTION-DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER AND STUDY HA TSOF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN CROSS RIVER UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY CALABAR, NIGERIA

This paper studied the influence of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD and study habits of university undergraduate students in Cross River University of Technology. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is basically an attention problem, which the students experience difficulty in paying attention and being easily distracted, lack of stamina to study for a reasonable time, difficulty completing assignments. Students with this disorder are perceived to have problem with their approach to studying. The study had three specific objectives to determine influence of academic faculties, gender and Attention deficit hyperacity disorder on study habit. The population of this study comprised all the undergraduate students in Cross River University of Technology from five Faculties in the Calabar Campus. A sample of 517 undergraduate students was selected using the stratified random sampling technique. Data collection instrument was a structured questionnaire. The major findings were that there were no significant differences found for both ADHD and study habit of students across academic faculties. Gender was found to influence both ADHD and study habit. The level of manifested ADHD among female students was higher than male students, while the male students had better study habits than the female. It was also found that Attention deficit disorder had a significant negative influence on study habits. The recommendations were that students with ADHD symptoms should present themselves for proper counseling, group discussion should be encouraged, proper time tabling for personal study and lecture attendance be emphasized.

COMMUNICATION IN MARITAL HOMES AND WORK PERFORMANCE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOLTEACHERS' IN AKWAIBOM STATE: IMPLICATIONS FOR FAMILY COUNSELLING

This study investigated the influence of communication in marital homes on secondary school teachers work performance in Akwa Ibom Slate. One research question and one hypothesis were formulated to guide the study The ex-postfacto research design was used in the study. Using stratified random sampling technique, 1056 respondents were selected from the population of5,277 married teachers from 50 public secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State. The study was carried out using validated questionnaires measured on a four point scale. The questionnaire was titled, Marital Problems and Work Performance Questionnaire (MPWPQ). The data obtained were analysed using mean responses to answer research question and t-tesl was used to test the hypothesis at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the investigation showed that lack of communication in marital homes influences secondary school teachers' work performance in Akwa Ibom State. Based on this finding, it is recommended among others, that counsellors should sensitise married teachers, school principals, state education administrators, other employers of labour and married workers through workshops and seminars that factors outside the work itself or work environment can influence work performance. They should therefore seek counselling in marriage relationship and work.

Counseling and the New National Policy on Education

Counseling denotes that people should undertake occupations that suit their personalities. That is to say, round pegs should be put into round holes. The paper submits that appropriate counseling whether it is carried on in the school or the traditional streaming and selection of occupations by the Africans is quite vital for effectiveness and efficiency in one’s chosen profession. This article affirms that with guidance and counseling, wastage in human as well as materials is drastically reduced and all these support the reason why the Federal Government of Nigeria in her National Policy on Education in (1981) stated that Guidance and Counseling should be an integral part of the overall educational system. The paper posits that the new National policy on Education is dependent on the accurate assessment and interpretation scores and hence, he child's entry behaviour should be carefully assessed at the junior and senior secondary levels. These baseline assessment data are very crucial in the decisions that are made on the child as to where he proceeds and what will benefit him most. The article concludes that indeed the success of the counselor in helping students in the 63.3.4 system is almost dependent on the degree of accuracy of the assessment he had made.

COUNSELING INTERVENTION STRATEGIES FOR PRE-RETIREMENT ANXIETY AMONG PUBLIC SERVANTS

Even with the general knowledge about retirement, civil servants continue to harbor one form of anxiety or another about the third phase of workers life. The thought of retirement causes a lot of anxiety among the soon-to-be retiree and other classes of civil servants. Anxiety over what their financial status will be, challenges on how to manage their health after retirement, no planning for life after retirement, difficulty on how to structure their time and manage it, total dependence on present salary, problem of securing residential accommodation after vacating the comfort of their official residence, ignorance of what to do with pension money, what the attitude of friends and family will be and the challenges of sudden retirement. Major findings showed that preretirement anxiety is caused by attitude of government on the payment of gratuity, fear of reduction in income, inability of many retirees to acquire a personal accommodation. Though the menace of pre-retirement anxiety is a serious issue on our civil servants; with effective counseling intervention programmes, individual or group counseling intervention process which consist of five stages from initiation to termination stages and the use of cognitive behavior cure) the problems can be tackled. Retirement enlightenment units should also be set up in all three levels of government to keep civil servants informed on the benefits of planning for retirement from assumption of duty as a civil servant.

COUNSELLING COUPLES AGAINST MARITAL CONFLICT FOR FAMILY SECURITY

Conflict among couple is a growing threat in our society today thereby causing insecurity among couples and other members of the family. This paper examines the causes of marital conflict as it affects couple. A number of causes highlighted in this paper include infidelity, domestic violence, control, disagreement over finance and parenting. Since conflict is imminent among couple, the paper suggest ways of handling conflict that will lead to personal happiness and healthy relationship in the lives of the couple. It stresses the need for stability and security in marriages and families for harmonious living both within the family. Community and society at large. The conjoint family therapy and conflict resolution strategics arc suggested for the professional counsellor to help family members. Furthermore, the paper looks at the importance of marriage counselling, and counselling interventions needed to resolve conflict among couple. Finally it was recommended that there must be adequate provision for preventive, remedial, and rehabilitative counseling interventions through marriage and sex guidance. Also regular seminars and workshops should be organized for couples on issues that have to do with conflict resolution and marital harmony. Such seminars could be organized and conducted by government at various levels (Federal, state, and local councils), religious bodies c.g. churches and mosques, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).

Becoming useful to self and the society is not easy. It is particularly difficult for young people of secondary school age who are adolescents battling with the biological changes that confront them, vis-a-vis their academic work and their adjustment to conform with the norms of the society. The paper looks at the concept of counseling and those who constitute secondary school dropouts. Reasons for drop out are examined. The paper further highlights the concept of self reliance and the need to expand appropriate counseling frontiers to deal with the issues of the school drop out.

EFFECT OF BURIAL CEREMONIES ON THE BEREAVED: COUNCELLING IMPLICATION

This study investigated the effect of burial ceremonies on the berea\>ed and its counseling implications. The research area of the study was the Bette people of Obudu Local Government Area ofC ross River State, Nigeria. A simple of200 respondents (adult male and females) were selected through the purposive sampling technique for the study. The researcher constructed a questionnaire which was used for data collection. Simple percentages were used for data analyses. The result showed that 85.2% responses were positive to the fact that burial ceremonies have psychological effect on the bereaved. The result also showed that burial ceremonies affect the bereaved economically (70.9%). It also revealed that burial ceremonies affect the. bereaved physically. Finally, the result also showed that 90.3% responses were positive with the fact that burial ceremonies affect the bereaved socially. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Education and reorientation of the people is highly necessary to correct this anomaly. Counseling intervention strategies were proffered and this included the fact that the bereaved (CLINTS) should be taught to actualize and accept the reality of death/bereavement, identify, focus on and direct positive attitudes towards bereavement and to adopt conventional ways to celebratef unerals amongothers.

EFFECT OF TEST ANXIETY ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF COLLEGE OF EDUCATION STUDENTS IN N ASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA

This paper focused on the assessment of test anxiety among students of Nasarawa State College of Education academic performance as an area of study. The research employed descriptive survey research design as appropriate for this study. Th,e population of the study consisted of 8,124 second year students of Colleges of Education in Nasarawa State. The sample for the study consisted 812 second year students. Simple random sampling technique was adoptedfor sampling the students. The researchers developed Statistics Anxiety Instrument (SAl) consisting of 30 items that reveal traits of test anxiety that students exhibit before, during and after a test. The instrument yielded 0.79 as index ofl ogical validity through experts’ appraisaland 0.84 as index of internal consistency through the Cronbach Alpha method of computing reliability. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize data related to the research questions, t-test statistics was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study found out that during statistics test, students mostly get so nervous that they forget facts that they know while thinking about the grades they may get interferes with their study and achievement in statistics examination. The study recommended that lecturers should employ different teaching methods that students-centered and techniques such as frequent testing, assignments, and projects after teaching a topic to reduce student test anxiety especially when a test is announced.Lecturers should also announce every test and give students enough time to prepare both physically and mentally.

Empowering Nigerian Women through Education: A Tool for National Reconstruction and Reformation

The paper looks at education as a tool for empowering Women towards the contribution to National Reconstruction and Reformation of the Nigerian society. It observes that the use of education as a tool for empowering women may be unrealistic given the present situation in the Nigerian society. The argument here is that the elitist view of education being the magic key to all problems is no longer realistic because no social institution operates outside the social\ political or economic forces of the society. The paper holds that in view of the numerous valuable contributions of women towards National Reconstruction and Reformation of the Nigeria society at varying levels; they need to be encouraged further by empowering them through education.

FAMILY RELATIONSHIP AS PREDICTOR OF PERSONALITY TRAITS AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN NASARAWA STATE

This study examined “Family Relationships as Predictor of Personality traits among Secondary School Students in Nasarawa state. The purpose of the study was to establish how family relationships predict personality traits of secondary school students. Two specific objectives were raised and translated into research questions and hypotheses. Descriptive survey research design was usedfor this study. The Population for this study was 22,073 SSII students. The sample for the study was 650 students selected using Krejcie and Morgan (1970) sampling table. Two instruments were used for the study namely: Family Relations Scale (FRS) and the “Big Five” personality Inventory (BFI). The instruments yielded validity indices of 0.82 for (FRS), 0.86 for (BFI) respectively while the reliability indices were 0.84 for the BFI, and 0.90 for the family relation rating scale. Mean and standard deviation as well as Pearson product moment correlation was used to answer and analyze research questions on the basis of the values of r (coefficient of correlation) .The results showed that family relationship predicts personality traits of secondary school students.

The success or otherwise of any educational system depends not only on the quality and calibre of teachers but also on adequate funding. Education is capital intensive venture, unfortunately in Nigeria; tertiary institutions have continued to bemoan inadequate funding in the face of escalating costs of maintaining infrastructure and running academic progammes. This paper examines the current funding of these institutions and the consequences of underfunding in contemporary Nigeria. The paper also suggests alternative avenues of funding in order to cope with the challenges of the 21ft century

The paper discussed guidance and counselling services for the implementation of the Universal Basic Education Programme. The guidance and counselling services listed and discussed were appraisal, educational, personal/social, counselling, vocational, orientation, information, placement and referral services. The paper concluded that for effective implementation of the UBE programme, guidance and counselling services in schools would be of great importance. It further recommended among others that professional counsellors be employed by government to man the guidance and counselling centres, for maximum benefit of the UBE programme.

Human Trafficking in Akwa-Ibom State Nigeria: Implications for Counselling and Rehabilitation of Victims

This study investigated the practice of human trafficking and its implications for counselling and rehabilitation ofvictims inAkwa Ibom State. The sample consisted of fifty victims of human trafficking inAkwa Ibom State. To accomplish this research objective, three research questions were formulated. The research adopted an expost facto research design and the instrument for data collection was a 30 item questionnaire titled, “Human Trafficking Practice Questionnaire (HTPQ) ”. Descriptive statistics of frequency scores and percentage counts were used to analyse the data. The findings of this study showed that extended family culture, unemployment, and educational background influence an individual's vulnerability to human trafficking. Based on the findings, it was recommended that parents should endeavour to provide for the physical and emotional needs of their children. Also professional counsellors should be employed by government in National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) to take care of the rehabilitation of human trafficked victims and implement employment strategies that could take care of the unemployed individuals in the society.
