    SOCIAL NETWORKING TOOLS IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

    The use of the internet supporting platforms by academic libraries facilitate and support education, moral values, pedagogical knowledge, access to quality information and ethics>. that can improve the lives of library users. Social networking tools allow the use of library services at home, at work, and throughout the community. The paper focuses on the use of social networking tools in the library and how these tools can bring users up to date, by oroviding effective and efficient library services. The characteristics, benefits and demerits of social networking tools were explored to explain how social networking tools can help academic library provide effective library services. Opportunities and challenges were identified such as low costs, ability to take library services beyond their geographical boundaries to favorite places, insufficient funds and lack of qualified personnel. It concluded that academic libraries could leverage on social networking platforms to re-introduce the global technology locally to facilitate making resources and services visible, and become indispensable partners. The paper recommended encouraging academic library sponsorship, and training personnel to become competent on the use of social networking tools
