Item Open Access REHABILITATION AND THE CONDITION OF PRISON INMATES IN KEFFI MEDIUM SECURITY PRISON(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University,Keffi., 2011-02-01) Shekwo, Joseph.; Osisiogu, U.C.The efficacy of rehabilitation programmes in Nigerian Prisons is an area of concern to practitioner and policy makers. This work assessed the nature, structure and usefulness of programmes aimed at reforming and rehabilitating prisoners in Keffi Prison of Nasarawa State, Nigerian. Interviews, questionnaires and statistical means were used to collate and analyze data. This study revealed that correctional and rehabilitative programmes were inadequate. In addition to lack of training equipment and workshops, the prison was found to be congested and inadequate founded. Hence the high rate of recidivism. It is importantfor the prison(s) to engage professionals and the government to liaise with the private sector to equip Keffi Prison in particular andprisons in Nigerian in general.Item Open Access THE TOWN AND THE GOWN: A CASE OF NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY, KEFFI AND ITS ENVIRONS(Department of Sociology, Nasarawa State University,Keffi., 2010-02-01) Ojunugwa, Francis Onu; Shekwo, Joseph.A town is defined as a place consisting or an agglomeration of houses, shops, etc, here F. means the environment hosting the gown which is an academic dress wore on occasions= here representing a University. The University is supposed to produce knowledge critical for growth and development of the town-environment. The symbiotic relationship between these two is what this study investigates. The sample survey method was employed while questionnaire as an instrument of data collection was administered on 72 respondents which formed the sample population from Angwan Lambu, BCG and High Court the immediate environment of the University. The study discovered that the establishment of Nasarawa State University has impacted positively on the environment. Though, there are cases oj social vices such stealing, rape, burglary, illicit dressing and the likes. The interest generated by the establishment ofthe university if sustained and a continuous production oj knowledge critical for development, the University will increasingly become synonymous with the environment - Keffi and Nasarawa State, Nigeria
