Item Open Access HARNESSING VIRTUAL CLASSROOM SYSTEM AS AN ALTERNATIVE FOR PART-TIME STUDIES IN NIGERIA(Department Of Mathematics, Nasarawa State University Keffi., 2011-09-26) Chaku, Shammah Emmanuel; Anyachebelu, Tochukwu Kene; Offiong, N.M.The clamour for higher education is on the increase globally, precisely, there is great need for higher education in Nigeria. For this mere fact, there was great need for part-time studies in the Nigerian universities. This need was short lived when the governing body of the Nigerian Universities; Nigerian University Commission (NUC) put a stop to this viable means of acquiring knowledge. The hope of Nigerians was salvaged with the advancement in technology, especially in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). With these inventions, we have what is known as the virtual classroom (VC), a medium that works like the traditional classroom system. The virtual class room is a teaching and learning environment located within a computer-mediated communication system which supports collaborative learning. The virtual classroom has three prominent components: A Virtual Instructor, a Server and Virtual Students. These three components interact together to form the Virtual Classroom System (VCS). This paper shows how virtual classroom can be harnessed as a replacement for part-time studies in Nigeria with the aid of synchronous and asynchronous tools. The virtual instructor sends lecture notes and materials through the server (internet) and the virtual student receives the note and sends feed back through the server. The server here serves as the point of contact between the virtual lecturer and the virtual student just like what is obtainable in a traditional classroom.Item Open Access Modeling Of Species Interaction in a Habitat Using Lotka- Volterra Type Systems(Department of Statistics, Nasarawa Sate University Keffi., 2018-01-01) Nweze, N.O.; Offiong, N.M.; Adehi, Mary Unekwu; Chaku, Shammah Emmanuel; Abdullahi, A.S.; Muhammad, Mahammad N.Mathematical models have been useful in the area of modeling of real life situations; its application can be found in virtually all spheres of scientific researches. As such, we adopt its use in the field of ecology where preys have to compete with other prey for survival. In this paper, we considered Lotka-Volterra type systems, consisting of two first order differential equations which were used to model the population size of prey–predator interaction. We also proposed a system of first order differential equations to model the population sizes of a prey and two predators. Under these conditions one of the predators dies out while the remaining predator and prey approach periodic behavior as time increases. Also we model the population size of two preys and one predator where there may be interaction between the preys. Under these conditions we found that one of the preys died out while the remaining preys and predators approached periodic behavior as time increased. For critical cases, each positive solution of the system was seen to be periodic in nature. Various examples and results were presented and further study was proposed.Item Open Access PROMOTING TOURISM IN NIGERIA THROUGH AN ENHANCED TOURISM MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – A PRELIMINARY STUDY.(Department of Statistics, Nasarawa Sate University Keffi., 2019-09-09) Wada, S.M.; Offiong, N.M.; Chaku, Shammah EmmanuelIn an era where information plays a vital role in our society because its use is unavoidable in our day-to-day activities; tourism has become popular as a leisure way of travel and it relies on information technology in order to deliver quality products and services to its customers. This paper proposes an Automated Tourism Management System (ATMS) to curb the peculiar problem of the current manual systems used by tourist centres. The slow, poor, tedious, inadequate, stressful and error-prone manual system currently used for tourist activities in Nigerian tourism sector is making the tourist management business difficult. This research work combines the concept of web based application and takes advantage of information and communication technology to provide all the necessary information needed by a tourist to embark on a tour. This research work also analyses the problems associated with the current manual system and provides a solution by designing and implementing a web based ATMS using the V-Shaped model of the SDLC and the system was implemented using PHP and MYSQL. The result obtained shows a user friendly system that is easy to use by both the administrators and tourists.
