Item Open Access Adolescents Sources of Contact with Substances used Among Secondary School Students in Keffi Town, Nasarawa State, Nigeria(Department of Psychology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2022-12-12) Lawrence, Orkuugh L.This study investigated adolescents' sources of doming in contact with substances use in Keffi Town. Sample for the study was drawn from four of the most prominent secondary schools in Keffi, viz: Federal Government College, Keffi; Government College, Keffi; Government Secondary School Kofa Housa, Keffi; and Government Day Secondary School Yelwa, Keffi. It was hypothesized that Participants from these schools would differ significantly on their sources of contact with substances use. The results of the study confirmed the hypothesis and the implications for the study were discussed as well as recommendations made.Item Open Access AFRICAN TRADITIONAL VALUES SYSTEM: AN ALTERNATIVE INTERPRETATION OF IJOV-CULT FOR ERADICATION OF CORRUPTION AND INSECURITY IN TIV, NIGERIA(Department of Psychology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2021-04-05) Lawrence, Orkuugh L.In order to survive and for human beings to be effective, sociologists and anthropologists believe that humans must learn the skills, acquire knowledge and adapt to ways of behaving in the society into which they are born. It is the intention of this article to examine the issues raised in an article by Paul Bohannon (1960:328-341) with particular reference to ‘ijov-cnll} in the light of recent corniplion and'insecurity developments in Nigeria, and to provide an alternative interpretation to aid the government efforts toward eradication of the endemic corruption and insecurity> in the country. We also highlight the new values in the Tiv religion of Ijov. The article recommended the establishment of community> police structure consistently with the people’s value system.Item Open Access CONFLICT, CONFLICT MANAGEMENT AND LESSONS FROM OMBI-EHAJE EARTH DAM IN UGBOJU DISTRICT, OTUKPO, BENUE STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Psychology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2018-03-06) Lawrence, Orkuugh L.; Ahmadu, Omaku S.S.The political structure called Nigeria has been bedeviled for a long time with intense competition among its constituent tribes for the control of resources. The sitting of developmental projects has often been a subject of controversy and conflict. This study was undertaken to illustrate the effectiveness of community based constructive interaction as unique technique of conflict management and conflict resolution in Nigeria. Critical literature was reviewed that points to the fact that some differences exists between conflict management and conflict resolution approaches. The role of conflict resolution in situations such as the Ombi-Ehaje dam case presents psychological tact of community based constructive interaction to change the perceptions of the parties that initially have incompatible goals to a goal compatibility achievement in a win- win outcome. Alternatively, the goals can be changed by making compromises. It appraises the development programs of past-governments and opines that historical factors largely occasioned by the British colonialists, the amalgamation of Northern and Southern ■ Protectorates, religious bigotry, tribalism, sectionalism, corruption and government propaganda among others, are responsible for the restiveness, non-chalant and apathetic attitudes of the Nigerians towards government development programs. A suggestion for the role of psychologist in social engineering, mobilization national re-orientation for NEEDS is advocated.Item Open Access PATTERN OF COPING WITH ENVIRONMENTAL STRESSORS: THE IMPLICATIONS FOR REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND SELF-MANAGEMENT ISSUES AMONG STUDENTS IN NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY, KEFFL(Department of Psychology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2013-07-06) Lawrence, Orkuugh L.University entrance presents a number of challenges like developing a sense of autonomy, making new fiends- often people from different backgrounds, challenges in coming to term with one's physical environment, interpersonal relationship, changing roles and so on. All these involve some stress and necessitate new patterns of coping and adaptation. This paper tried to look at the concepts of stress and slessors, pattern of coping and its implications for reproductive health and self-management among students in Nasarawa state university, Keffi. Variables of spatial behaviour and personal constructs were discussed and concluded that, for University students' living to be meaningful, they must develop cognitive mapping abilities. This is hope to enable them acquire general knowledge and skills on reproductive health and self-management issues in Nigerian universities. A recommendation of 'cognito ergo sum' principle of self- development and management was given for the Nigerian university students.Item Open Access THE PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT OF COMMUNAL LAND DISPUTE ON THE FAMILY INSTITUTION IN TIV, BENUE STATE(Department of Psychology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2020-04-04) Lawrence, Orkuugh L.; Audu, GodiyaThe research focused on the psychological impact of communal land disputes on the family institution in Tiv. This was with the aim of determining the causes of communal land disputes so as to see its impact on the family. Further attempts were made to see the role of community leaders, women and the youths in the disputes. Possible ways were also soughtfor peaceful resolution and management ofthe phenomenon. The method of participant observation using Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and oral interview was adopted for data collection. The major findings of the study indicate that land, role played by youths, elders, women, police and the court are the major causes of the disputes. An extensive appraisal of the major factors of value orientation across cultures and social systems in the globe indicates the limitations of the untested universal assumptions of leadership effectiveness in developing such theories on social norms, values, identities, self- concept and individualism-collectivism. The challenges are multiple-including membership status in organizations, leadership positions in organizations, renureship and belief systems, and are occurring across cultures in Africa and within a sub-culture when addressing majority-minority matters. A social identity and leader prototypicality model proposed by Hogg and Van Knippenberg (2003) has been recommended for Nigerian organizations. This is hope, will provide a context for the citizens of Nigeria to believe in themselves and their abilities to solve their country’s organizations ’ leadership problems.Item Open Access Traditional Values of Social Science Research and Statistical Techniques for Analyses(Department of Psychology, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2019-03-03) Lawrence, Orkuugh L.Item Open Access VALUES ORIENTATION AND ORGANIZATIONS LEADERSHIP EFFECTIVENESS: HOFSTEDE'S MODEL COMPARING UNITED STATES AND JAPAN WITH NIGERIA.(Department of Psychology, Nasarawa State University, 2019-03-03) Lawrence, Orkuugh L.The research analyzed values orientation and organization effectiveness in United States and Japan compared with Nigeria. This was with the aim of understanding the Hofstede1 (1980, 2001) model of values for organizational leadership across the globe. United States and Japan are two giant economic powers which have developed their own management and leadership practice that is suitable for their culture were selected to compare with Nigeria.A meta- analytical literature search revealed that the differences between behavior and characteristics of leaders in one country are relatively the same compared to the other. There has been much criticism for the generalization of a nation's culture and its inability to represent the cultural differences within each country. Conclusions were that United States, Japan and Nigeria have the same ideology of capitalism, but the cultural value of each country has a very significant impact on their leadership style. Though the cultural dimension is treated one by one in contrasting Japan, United States and Nigeria, it is also true that those five dimensions can simultaneously affect the value and belief that is important for both leaders and followers. Suggestions were made for the use of the findings of this study by leaders and managers in organization when they are faced with situation to lead people from different cultural background. It is also not limited only in organizational level but also for personal understanding to learn and develop their leadership quality.
