    Immune Status of HIV/AIDS Patients with Hepatitis B Virus in Benue State, Nigeria

    The CD4 counts of HIV positive individuals witli hepatitis B surface antigen was a factor used to determine the immune status among infectecjhndividuals in Benue state. Total 966 males infected with HIV, 15 (1.55%) were positives for HbsAg-fwith CD4 counts <335 cell pL“' and in die female category, 10 (0.95%) of 1042 weie positive foi HbsAg-r with die CD4+ counts <420 at die initial CD4 cells counts. According to age, individuals aged between 30 and 39 years were positive for HbsAg+ with'their CD4 counts <;335 cell pL"'. The least in terms ot HbsAg-h carriage (0,34%) were those k50 years whose CD4 read <224 cell pL~l. After an interval of 6 months, die CD4 level declined' to <100 cell pL~'. However, tliere was a significant relationship in the degree of infection among sexes (Z = 0.40<3=1.96). HbsAg+ carriage rate was dependent on age (x2 = 7.82<0.05).

    IMMUNOLOGIC DETERIORATION OF CD4 C^ELLS IN HIV ' INDIVIDUALS WITH FIBsAg+ CARRIAGE RATE IN BENUE ; STATE, NIGERIA

    HIV positive individuals with HBsAg+ was a factor used to determine the immune status among infected HIV individuals in Benue state. .Of 966 males'infected with HIV 15(60.0%) were positive 'with CD4 counts<335 cell/pi and in .the female category 1042,10(40.0%) were positive with the CD4 counts<420cell/pi at the first CD4 cells count. According to age distribution/ between the age of 30-39 years were HBsAg+ witii die CD4 counts<335 cell/pi and the least 288, T(4.0%) for HBsAg+ carriage rate, ‘die CD4 counts was <224 cell/pi between the age of >50 years old. At the second CD4 counts (after 6 months) the CD4 counts fell below <200 cell/pi and <100cell/pl respectively. However, there was a .significant relationship in the degree of infection among sexes given that, Z=0.40<±1.96. And HBsAg+ carriage rate was depended on age(x2=7.82<0.05) with a significant difference.

    A Pilot Study Of Microsporidiosis And CD4 T-Ceils In North- Central, Nigeria

    Two species of Microsporidia were Identified: (Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Encephalitozoon cunlpuli) among .the non-HIV. and. immunocompromised individuals at the Jos. Plateau, and Benue State, Nigeria. In Jos, 500 species were subjected to laboratory test and the Infection rate of microsporidium species were 1(0.5%) for gastroenterilis with <350 cell/pl;. 15(15.0%) .were HIV individuals with <200 cell/ |j|; and -19(19.0%) AIDS patients had low CD4 counts (<100 cell/, pi). The severity of the illness was seen to have impact on the GD4 counts of the individuals in Makurdi where,. in both sexes 5(3.5%) students had <100 cells/ pi CD4 counts with corresponding fail in 36(5.7%)-Civil servants of <100 ’cells/ pi cells count* Housewives were 44(6.8%) with <50 cells/ pi, and others (undefined occupational status) 11(1.5%) had CD4.counts'<90 cell/ pL Microsporidiosis is'now known to .' cause a serious threat in HIV/AIDS patients in Nigeria.with less pathogenesis among non-HIV individuals hence, P<±1:96. critical region, we.-accept that,, there was'a significant difference in the distribution of Microsporidiosis among sexes'In Makurdi with the x2=0.59<7.8-at '5% level of significance (indicating a significant difference in sex related prevalence at the Jos, Plateau), However, there was’high level of social, behavior-observed al'Makurdi with a general low CD4 counts (<50 cell/pl-<100 cell/pi).
