Item Open Access EFFECT OF FLAME RETARDANT TREATMENT ON THERMAL BEHAVIOUR OF SOME TROPICAL TIMBERS(Department of Chemistry, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2009-11-26) S. S, Audu.; F. W, Abdulrahman.; A.U, Itodo. Some wood species namely Oro, (Nesogrdonia paparcrifera) Agbagun (Distemonantus benthaminaus), Ububa (Khaya iveronsis) Obeche (Triplochiton sceroxylon) and Black/Afara (Terminalia Iveronsis), commonly used for roofing and furniture were impregnated with solution of borax (Na2B407.10H2O) andantimony trioxide (Sb2Of Results obtained showed that ignition time (sec) for antimony trioxide for the different wood species concentration (g/dm3) increased as follows: Obeche 3 7.3-23.6, Oro 10.9-13.6, Black/Afara 6.6-8 A, Agbagun 11.4 -14-4, and Ububa 9.3-12.3 while that of sodium tetra borate for Obeche 36.0-58.0, Oro 16.0-32.0, Black/Afara 20.0-31.0, Agbagun 10.040.0and Ububa 19.0-35.0. ltwas alsoobserved that the flame propagation rate and after glow-time reduced while char formation and ignition time increased drastically.
