    MACRO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND THE REALITIES OF MASS POVERTY IN NIGERIA’S FOURTH REPUBLIC

    The forces surrounding the emerging economies cf underdeveloped world, especially Africa has practically stifled its economic progress, growth, deidopnent and sustainability This economic condition bring to the fore the massive onslaught cf rural/urban poverty which the African continent grapples with since the post-world war II era to date The economic misfortunes and incidence cf mass poverty in Africa, zis-d-zis Nigeria is used as a point of departure in this study The paper underscores the idedogjcd and philosophical undertone cf corruption by agnts cf state characterized by the pervasive activities cf domestic bourgeoisie doss as well as the international capital manifesting in form cf colonialism and imperialism as a major character in the historical process cf underdevelopment and mass poverty in peripherial states cf A frica, A sia and Latin A merica, respectively Cfparticular interest in this study are the activities cf domestic bourgeoisie elite doss who haze ugprously displayed some degee cf vsiodessness, corrupt tendencies and abject lack cf desires to drawup workable plans to redeem the battered image cf African/ Nigrum economic misfortunes. This state cf affairs has practically engendered economic underdevdoprrent, misery and disturbing levels cf poverty in the nationstate system The study is a theoretical investigation into the trajectory cf nation building which has been hampered throuff) the preualence cf extreme poverty The methodology adopted is basically secondary sources, and relevant research materials from bocks,journals ,government documents ,intemet,etc,were used The paper condudes that for any meaningful development to happen in Nigeria, the political doss must go on a reverse gar in term cf policy formulation, euduation and implementation with a strong resoke to tackle social problems, induding poverty headlong

    STRATEGIES FOR MOBILIZING FINANCIAL AND TECHNICAL RESOURCES FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

    This study examines the strategies for mobilizing financial and technical resources for community development in Nigeria. Using data generated through secondary sources and subjected to description analysis, it was revealed. that community development programmes in Nigeria have been facing the problems of inadequate financial and technical resources for successful implementation of community development projects. This situation has left most of the rural areas in Nigeria to continue to remain backward in terms of development despite the existence of community development activities. To achieve successful community development programmes in Nigeria, the study suggests that the following strategies can be utilized for mobilizing financial and technical resources for community development: imposing of levies, project appeal fund, community day celebration, obtaining loans, conferment of honours and chieftaincy titles, joint venture, utilization of informal financial intermediaries, and undertaking projects that attract funds generation and maintenance of technical equipment.
