Item Open Access EFFECT OF BOARD CHARACTERISTICS ON EARNINGS MANAGEMENT OF QUOTED CONSUMER GOODS IN NIGERIA(Department of Accounting, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2021-06-01) Barde, Barnabas E.; Mohammed, Munirat Nma; Naburgi, Musa MohammedThis study examines the effect of f board characteristics on earnings management of quoted consumer goods in Nigeria. The study utilizes ex-post facto research design as panel data for the period of ten (10) years spanning 2010 through 2019 were used. The population of the study is the consumer goods in Nigeria, but purposive sampling method was used to select 18 consumer goods in Nigeria with consistent data set for the study period. Panel regression analysis was used and it was found that, both board independence and size have significant negative effect of earnings management. However, insignificant negative effect of board gender diversity on earnings management was found. It is concluded that, financial reports misrepresentation in the quoted consumer goods in Nigeria, decreases with increase in the number of directors in the board, and the number of non-executive directors. Based on these it is recommended among others that, quoted consumer goods companies in Nigeria should ensure that the number of directors in the board is enough to help make good decision in relation to quality of financial reports to be presented by the companies. This is to say that, as good and capable hands (Directors) are committed to the board, the board is said to be more effective since talents will be synchronised to make the most of good decisions.Item Open Access EFFECT OF CONTRIBUTORY PENSION FUNDS ON CAPITAL MARKET PERFORMANCE IN NIGERIA(Department of Accounting, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2021-12-12) Hamzat, Mohammed K.; Barde, Barnabas E.; Aza, Solomon Mangba; Lasisi, Tirimisiyu K.This study investigates the effect of contributory pension funds on capital market performance in Nigeria utilizing time series data extracted from pension commission and Nigerian Exchange Group covering 2005Q1 to 2019Q4. The specific objectives of the study were to examine the effect of pension funds investment in government securities, corporate securities and real estate property on capital market performance in Nigeria proxied with market capitalisation. The study employed ex post facto research design, stationarity test revealed on data were found to be stationary at first difference. Based on the stationarity result, the study conducts co-integration test using Johansen co-integration test. The cointegration test results showed that there is long run relationship among the variables. The results of the study revealed that pension funds investment in govenunent securities and corporate securities have significant positive effect on capital market performance in Nigeria both in the long and short run, while pension funds investment in real estate property has no significant effect on capital market performance in Nigeria in the long and short run. The study concludes that pension funds investments have positively affected stock market development in Nigeria. The study recommends that Pension funds administrators should allocate more assets and investment in Government securities. Also, pension funds administrators should invest more funds in relatively high corporate debt securities that offer high returns such as banks in order to deepen the capital market growth in Nigeria. Lastly, Pension Fund Administrators in Nigeria should gradually reduce exposure of their investment to real estate property as it has been revealed by this study that investment in real estate property has not improved the capital market performance in Nigeria.Item Open Access EFFECT OF DIVIDEND PAYOUT ON FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF QUOTED DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN NIGERIA(Department of Business Administration, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2015-06-05) Barde, Barnabas E.; Mallami, Keffi Muhammad; Naburgi, Musa MohammedIn recent times, Nigerian banks payout dividends to their shareholders when they did not have enough profits to do so (stable dividend). They did that to encourage potential investors that they were doing well. This had degenerated to great problem that most of these banks had to merge or acquire by other banks. This study provided empirical evidence on the effect of dividend payout on stock prices andfuture earnings growth of quoted Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. The study adopted descriptive research design using Ordinary Least Square Method of Regression on cross sectional time senes data collected from the annual reports of the sampled quoted bank for the period spanning through 2001-2013. The findings of the study revealed positive but insignificant effect of dividend payout on stock prices and one year future earnings growth of listed deposit money banks in Nigeria. In the case of Dividend payout and three year earnings growth, a negative and insignificant relationship is revealed. The major finding is that dividend given alone cannot increase the stock price and future earnings. Thus, the study concluded that, payment of more dividends has no significant influence on stock prices andf uture earnings growth of listed banks in Nigeria. Therefore, retaining dividends forf urther investment has ag reater effect on stock prices and future earnings growth in Nigeria. This inspired the study recommendation for given priority to dividend policy decisions in corporate governance in Nigeria among others.Item Open Access Effect of Risk Management Practices on the Growth of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises in Abuja, FCT Nigeria(Department of Entrepreneurship Studies, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2022-05-05) Paul, Vincent; Njoku, Chukwuemeka Nnamdi; Barde, Barnabas E.The study examined the effect of risk management practices on the growth of small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) in Abuja, FCT, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive research design to determine the relationship between the variables using multiple regression analysis. The study found that risk monitoring and risk management practices; have a positive effect on the growth of SMEs in Abuja, FCT. From the findings, the study recommends that SMEs need to adjust their risk management models such as ERM. Institutionalize the risk management process and integrate it into their organization's daily life. This will ensure that SMEs in Abuja, FCT meet international standards and are globally competitive. Furthermore, administrators need to use information technology for risk management by performing more accurate risk assessments and measurements and installing information systems that can monitor and ensure the effectiveness of risk management procedures. These are recommended in a situation when training employees on business risk management policies and clearly defining risk management roles and responsibilities.Item Open Access Effects of Intra-Family Relationship on Post – Succession Performance of Selected Family Businesses in North East Nigeria(Department of Entrepreneurship Studies, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2017-11-11) Paul, Vincent; Barde, Barnabas E.; Abbah, James Edache Idoko; Idika, KaluOne major problem faced by many businesses and indeed family-owned businesses is the issue of transition. For a family-owned business, generational change is a matter of concern as a small mistake in the selection of a successor could seriously affect the survival and performance of the business. This study examined the effect of intra-family relationship on the post- succession performance of selected family-owned businesses in the North East Nigeria. The study used primary data with the aid of questionnaire collected from one hundred and nine (109) family-owned businesses. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The study found that intra-family relationship is a significant determinant of post- succession performance of family-owned businesses in the North East on aggregate level. On the specific level, both level of trust and lack of conflict have significant effects while, personal quality of family members though exerting positive influence, has no statistical significance. These findings imply that when a family has a close relationship, members work weather to improve the performance of their family business. In line with the findings, this study recommends for a closer tie among family members in a succession period. This could create better ideas for a better business performance after succession.Item Open Access EXCHANGE TRADED FUNDS AND THE VOLATILITY OF THE NIGERIAN STOCK MARKET(Banking and Finance Department, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2015-10-01) Abdul, Adamu; Barde, Barnabas E.; Abdul, Zainab HussainiThis study examined the effect o f Exchange Traded Funds on the volatility o f the Nigerian stock market. Using the daily stock returns All Share Index (ASI) and the two sampled ETFs between 02 January, 2014 and 30November, 2015. We tested for stationarity of the data using Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test and used the Auto Regressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (ARCH) and Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (GARCH) to test the volatility. The result shows the data as stationary and the presence of volatility clustering. It also shows that the previous day return of A S I information influences today's A S I return. Similarly, the ETFs also play significant influence on the volatility of A SI and stock prices. Since their influences are significant, it means that NEWGOLD and VETGRIF30 which are outside shocks transmit volatility to A SI of the NSE. It was recommended that investors and fo n d managers should not ignore the impact of news while forming expectations on their investment returns on stocks listed on Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE)Item Open Access IMPACT OF BANK CREDIT ON THE PERFORMANCE OF MANUFACTURING SECTOR IN NIGERIA(Department of Business Administration, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2014-01-03) Barde, Barnabas E.; Mallami, Keffi MuhammadThe study investigates the effect of bank credit on the performance of the manufacturing sector in Nigeria. It specifically sought to find out how the total domestic credit of deposit money banks affects the performance of the manufacturing sector in Nigeria. Time series data were collected from secondary source covering a period of 20 years (1990-2010). Ordinary least square econometric technique, ADF lest and Granger causality test were employed in testing the hypotheses. The findings of the study show that credit to manufacturing sector have significant relationship with capacity utilization (56%) and index of manufacturing production (69%). However, the relationship is not strong. These results, therefore, call for intense effort by the government, manufacturers and the lending institutions to evaluating the bank credit and provide appropriate macro- economic conducive environment, so as to encourage efficient and effective intermediation process of lending and borrowing by the financial institutions to achieve high investment in the manufacturing sector.Item Open Access Impact of risk management on the performance of deposit money banks in Nigeria(Department of Entrepreneurship Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2016-06-15) Barde, Barnabas E.; Sam, Tende B.A.; Abbah, Edache Idoko James; Paul, VincentThis study examines the relationship between risk management and the performance of deposit money banks from the year 1997 to 2011. The data for performance are aggregate operational risk, market risk and credit risk were collected from the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. It was found that there exist a significant relationship between risk management and the performance of Deposit Money Banks. It was also found that fraud is in the increase in banks. Based on the finding of the study, it is recommended that Deposit Money Banks should engage more in an all-encompassing risk management practice, by so doing the operational risk, credit risk and market risk will all be given adequate attention. It is also recommended that the Central Bank and Deposit Money Banks should intensify the implementation of strong security and transaction monitoring systems to prevent successful attacks in the electronic payment platforms where frauds tend to be more prevalent.Item Open Access IMPACT OF SUCCESSOR’S PERSONAL QUALITIES ON POST – SUCCESSION PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED FAMILY BUSINESSES IN NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA(Department of Entrepreneurship Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2017-12-18) Paul, Vincent; Barde, Barnabas E.; Atsuwe, Cephas GbandeThe position of family business to the growth of any nation is very strategic. However, the survival of most family businesses has been the major issue of concern to the stakeholders. This study examines the influence of successors’ personal characteristics on the post succession performance of family businesses. The data were collected from a cross-section of fifty two (52) family owned businesses in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. The data collected were analyzed using regression analysis. The result indicates that all the measures of successors’ performance vis-à-vis level of education, training, work experience and preparation level all show a significant influence on the post succession performance of the businesses. The implication of the finding is that these factors are key to the success of the post succession performance of family businesses. It is therefore recommended, successors to family business should be made to undergo training prior succession; to enable them have relevant experience in the operation of such business and be prepared before taking over the family business.Item Open Access MUTUAL FUND ATTRIBUTES AND INVESTMENT PERFORMANCE OF MUTUAL FUNDS IN NIGERIA(Department of Accounting Nasarawa State University Keffi., 2018-06-21) Barde, Barnabas E.; Mohammed, MahmudaThis study examined the relationship between the mutual funds main attributes and their performance. This study employed monthly data for a total sample of 65 mutual funds over a period of most recent seven years (to year end 2017). The data for this study were gathered from secondary sources, the data collected were analyzed using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression. The study found that size of fund and fund age are found to have insignificant effect on mutual fund performance in Nigeria, while risk level of mutual fund has significant effect on mutual fund performance in Nigeria. The study suggests that it may be better for investors to route their investments in small-sized funds and older funds having past track record. The funds with these attributes have the potential of generating high returns. What is required of modern organizations is for them to refocus attention on the management of resources in such a manner that will result to greater benefit to the consumers. This benefit can be achieved through the rebranding of production management processes and Quality control mechanism that will facilitate efficient and effective product and service delivery. Youths are very important stakeholder in any society. They are not only the future of Nigeria, but also a major stakeholder and useful resource in nation building. However, available data show that youth unemployment is very prevalent in Nigeria with far reaching implications for stability of the economy. Successive governments have failed to create new jobs and to ensure job security. This paper suggests the strengthening of the informal sector as an alternative strategy towards job creation and hence alleviating the poverty situation in Nigeria. To move out of poverty, jobs must be created in micro, small and medium enterprises as a right step in attaining the desired reduction in the. level of poverty.
