C., IhemejeMathematics is a subject that is dreaded by an average Nigerian student, either at the secondary (high school) level or at the university (college). Although the reasons may be sympathetic to the student in that he/she may not be the one to be blamed, yet mathematics plays very important role in the day to day life of the manager who has to taken decisions either in the public or private business as well as the researcher who must report findings through the use of mathematics as the language of science. A case is made for more attention to be specially paid to the teaching and declaration of mathematics as priority subject at all levels of education and particularly in the academic environment. A case is also made for a policy and national orientation on record keeping and data banks because of the role such banks may play in providing data for processing on which decision making and research are premised.Item Open Access STRATEGISING FOR MANAGERIAL EXCELLENCE IN NIGERIA THROUG CONTROLLING SOCIO-CULTURAL INFLUENCES ON MANAGERS(Department of Business Administration, Nasarawa State University, Keffi., 2010-08-12) Abbah, Edache Idoko JamesIt is an acknowledged fact that indigenous top management staff of Nigerian companies a well qualified to hold their positions. Yet, Nigerian companies perform poorly, particular under the globalization regime. This paper is the result of a survey into reasons was Nigerian managers and their companies perform poorly. In the survey 210 top management staff of randomly selected Nigerian companies in the telecommunications, banking at agro-processing companies in six states in north-central Nigeria were interviewed and recorded on a Likert scale questionnaire. The data was analyzed using ANOVA statistic find out whether there was a significant difference between the means of the responses managers in the six states. Results showed that the major causes were socio-cultural pressures including poverty among extended family, and poor shareholder/board control, i well as strategic myopia. It is recommended that managers can be relieved from socio-cultural pressures by taking sole decision making from them to a combination of two board institution of target-setting MBO at the shareholders level, and training them on strategy formulation and implementation.
