Item Open Access INDIGENE/SETTLER PROBLEM AND THE LINGERING CRISIS IN JOS(Department of Religion Studies, Nasarawa State University, Keffi, 2013-09-11) Conjoh, D.DThere appears to be a contrast between the position of Section 14 (3) of the 1999 Nigerian constitution which places more emphasis on promoting national unity, national loyalty, avoidance of predominance of persons from a few states or from a few ethnic or other sectional groups in government; and the present realities of the contest for identity, resource control and marginalization of minority groups among others in the Nigerian society: This experience has constantly been the case in Nigeria owing to some of the factors that surround the 1914 amalgamation which was further deepened at independence in Nigeria and in Plateau State in particular, thus creating rift between the indigenes and settlers. This paper attempts a historical account of the problem witnessed in Jos as a result of the claims of ownership of the city. The work also looks at the different arguments or accounts on the emergence of the city particularly on the first settlers in Jos. As a city within a location, it was possible that some natives of some significant or insignificant number existed before the discovery of tin. This being the case, the paper examines the claims and counter-claims of ownership of Jos which has led to the lingering crisis in Jos today. The work therefore suggest among others, effective security system, provision of basic amenities, dialogue, tolerance, functional education, as ways towards achieving peace in Jos.
