Item Open Access assessment of ambient temperature of housing types in keffi TOWNSHIP, NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA(Geography Department, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2019-12-05) Angbashim, Nancy PeterIndoor temperature affects thermal comfort and human health. In a changing climate with a predicted change in temperature extremes\ understanding indoor temperatures, both hot and cold, of different housing types is imperative. This study assessed indoor temperatures of housing types in Keffi Township using a survey research design. The aim of the study was to investigate indoor temperature differential in different housing types in Nasarawa State, Nigeria. To achieve this aim, data on housing types and building material types as well as morning, afternoon and evening indoor temperatures were acquired through measurements and observation using handheld Mercury Thermometer and field note. The acquired data were analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistical tools and the results presented in tables. Findings showed that apartment block, tenement/multi-tenented traditional and detached/semi-detached were the four housing types in the study area with detached/semi-detached being the dominant (31.1%) type. Zinc (64%), ceiling board (74.49%) cement wall (84%) and cement floor (52%) were the most commonly used materials for roofing, ceiling, walling and flooring of the different housing types in the study area. The morning (26.7 °C), afternoon (28.3 °C) and night (27.6 °C) indoor temperatures of the tenement/multi-tenanted housing type was the highest while those of traditional housing were the lowest. The afternoon and night indoor temperatures varied significantly and the main determinants of the variation were found to be differences in roofing and ceiling materials. Zinc roof, no ceiling, cement wall and floors were the main contributors to increasing indoor afternoon temperature while step-tiles roof, POP ceiling, brick walls and mud floor had the highest relative decreasing effect. Zinc roof, board ceiling, cement wall and floor contributed majorly to increasing indoor night temperature. Apart from the addition of no-ceiling, all other materials that contributed majorly to decreasing indoor afternoon temperature were same for indoor night temperatures. The study concluded that indoor temperatures are affected by housing types and construction materials in the study area and apart from zinc roof; no-ceiling, cases and board ceiling; cement walls, all other roofing, ceiling, walling and flooring materials guarantees a much conducive indoor temperatures. Hence, it was concluded that, authorities concern with housing development in the Keffi LGA should ensure that upcoming Tenement/multi-tenanted houses are constructed with relatively affordable materials that guarantees comfortable indoor afternoon and night temperature such as the use of PVC roofs and Aluminium roofing sheet
