Item Open Access MENACE OF ROAD TRAFFIC CRASHES ON THE PEOPLE OF KEFFI AND ITS ENVIRONS, NASARAWA STATE, NIGERIA(DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY FACULTY OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE NASARAWA STATE UNIVERSITY, KEFFI, 2017-11-20) Aina, John SundayRoad traffic accidents (RTAs) have resulted in more waste of lives and property than major communicable disease and this has adversely affected the socio-economic wellbeing of families. The aim of the research is to assess the menace of road traffic crashes on the peple of keffi and its environs which covers; Keffi-Gunduma,Keffi-Kokona Junction, Keffi-Gidan Zakara and Keffi-Gauta junction road. The specific objectives were to determine the sex distribution and age brackets of the number of persons injured, examine the degree of the sex and age brackets of the number of persons killed, Identify the sex distribution and age brackets of the number of the total casualty involved in road traffic crashes (RTCs), Identify the sex distribution and age brackets of the total number of people involved in road traffic crashes from 2011-2015 and to determine the implication of these road traffic crashes on the socio-economic well being of the people in the study area . Both primary and secondary data were obtained for the study. The study has presented the processed data which were analyzed and represented in tabular and others forms of illustrations such as charts based on the data received from Federal road safety Corps, Keffi, Nasarawa State and the results sequentially were arranged according to appropriate tables and charts representing the analyzed form of the research questions. It was observed that road traffic accidents (RTAs) is one of the causes of deaths in the studied area. This menace has become a social problem. The sex distribution and age brackets of people involved in road traffic accidents (RTAs) between 2011-2015 were 2513 male adults, 999 female adults, 183 male children and 93 female children making a grand total of 3788 persons as against the grand total casualty of 2337 persons which has adversely affected the socio-economic well being of the families of the victims of the persons involved in road traffic crashes. Some recommendations were made on how to reduce or create a safe motoring Environment against road traffic accidents in the study area.
