Item Open Access AN APPRAISAL OF THE REGULATORY POWERS OF THE NATIONAL BROADCASTING COMMISSION IN INFLUENCING THE ACTIVITIES OF THE NIGERIAN BROADCASTING INDUSTRY(Department of Private and Business Law, Nasarawa State University Keffi, 2019-05-01) Ganiyu, Tajudeen AdegbiteThis study examined the regulatory powers of National Broadcasting Commission in influencing the activities of the Nigerian Broadcasting Industry in terms of ethics and professional standards of the industry. In this research work, the activities of the radio and television arms of this Industry in Nigeria was used to evaluate the regulatory roles of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission. In order to achieve the objectives of this research which includes an appraisal of the various legal and regulatory inclusions deployed by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission to superintend the sector, in pre- and post regulatory monitoring activities/roles of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission were investigated to determined the level of compliance of the industry to identify ethics, norms and values as set by the law protections of the profession. The research employs the doctrine of research methodology where works of previous works of writers upon the issues were utilized. The study finds that lack adequate attitude of the Regulatory and professional bodies particularly in the issue of ethical conduct and practitioner’s welfare possess a serious concern for the media industry in Nigeria. The research concluded by advocating for a move robust media practice and effective monitoring by media regulatory agency as well as the professional groups towards sustaining the major roles of Nigerian Broadcasting Commission in Nigeria. The study recommended media training acquisition of management skills and sound ethical practice for a viable function for media practice in Nigeria and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission should change towards performing its duties as the watchdog of the society to ensure sustainable development
